Gray blending or full gray coverage: which is right for you?

If you're starting to see gray, there are two very different ways to handle it. The right one depends on how much gray you have, how you want it to look, and how often you want to be in the chair. At York & Co., we talk through gray coverage and gray blending with you at a free consultation before anything is mixed.

What's the difference between gray blending and gray coverage?

Full gray coverage colors every gray hair to match one shade, so the gray disappears. Gray blending works with your gray instead of hiding it: lighter and darker tones placed through the hair let the gray read as brightness, and the line where it grows back is much softer.

Who is gray blending best for?

Blending suits you if you'd like a softer, more natural result, if you'd rather not chase a hard root line every few weeks, or if you're thinking about growing your gray out over time. It tends to work best when the gray is spread through your hair rather than gathered in one place.

Who is full gray coverage best for?

Full coverage suits you if you want the gray gone and a single, even color. It gives the most uniform result. The trade-off is upkeep: as your hair grows, new gray shows at the root, so coverage clients usually come back more often for a touch-up.

How often will I need to come back?

That depends on how fast your hair grows, how much gray you have, and which approach you choose. Blending generally grows out more gently than full coverage, which is the main reason people choose it. Your stylist will suggest a schedule at your appointment.

Can I switch from full coverage to blending?

Often, yes, but it can take a few visits. If you've covered your gray for years, the old color has to be softened gradually so the change doesn't look patchy. We plan that kind of transition the same careful way we plan a color correction.

How do I get started?

Book a free consultation. Bring a few photos of looks you like and tell us what you've used on your hair before. We'll recommend blending or coverage, explain the upkeep, and give you a price before you commit. Brian Davis, who has 29 years behind the chair, offers both.
